The design and assembly of HTS equipment is complex, consisting of the superconducting coils or matrix assemblies and their support structures, cryostat assemblies with vacuum jacket, instrumentation, and piping for the refrigeration system. Thus there are many complex mechanical design issues that need to be evaluated. In particular, the thermal and electromagnetic stresses when the device is operating and during abnormal or transient conditions need to be analyzed. The simultaneous combination of these stresses is one of the design challenges.
