GrafTech is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of carbon and graphite products for industrial applications in a diverse array of industries: metal production, electronics, chemicals, aerospace and transportation, among others.  We operate eleven state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities strategically located on four continents with our corporate headquarters located in Cleveland (Parma), OH.  We sell to customers in about 80 countries worldwide.

The Global Trade Compliance Manager will assume responsibility for the development, management and implementation of GrafTech’s worldwide trade compliance strategy, programs and related projects to ensure compliance with the export control and import laws and regulations in all countries where GrafTech does business.  The candidate will identify compliance process gaps and build a roadmap for improving compliance controls. This is the most senior trade compliance position within the company.

The successful candidate will lead the day-to-day export and import operations and advise company management on trade compliance initiatives, objectives, and associated risks. This is an opportunity for a highly motivated and organized person to assume a leadership role and to enhance our global compliance program.

Responsibilities include:

• Oversee and direct export control compliance for all GrafTech business locations worldwide.


• Hire, manage and supervise a Trade Compliance Analyst.


• Manage import procedures to ensure compliance with U.S. Customs import regulations, including HTS classification, valuation, country of origin, recordkeeping and special trade programs.


• Determine export and import requirements by partnering with functional managers and overseas locations to develop compliant business/sales/operational strategies.


• Implement a company-wide export and import audit program.


• Create an employee training program, training materials and manuals.


• Represent the organization with relevant government agencies as needed; respond to government inquiries.


• Form and chair a GrafTech trade compliance committee to provide regular updates to senior management.


• Participate in relevant outside trade compliance groups/councils.

Required Qualifications:

• Cumulative 10 years experience in import and export administration.


• 5+ years management experience in International Trade Compliance.


• Bachelors Degree in business or related degree. MBA preferred. 


• International business experience. Foreign language skills a plus.


• Superior knowledge of US Customs laws and export regulations.


• EU zone and Brazil import / export experience is also highly valued.


• Must have extensive working knowledge of ITAR, EAR, trade sanctions, and FCPA.


• Formal compliance training from external agencies such as Society for International Affairs (SIA), Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) or American Conference Institute (ACI) will be considered favorably.


• Strong team development skills and ability to work effectively with cross functional stake holders.
