JOB DESCRIPTION
The Managing Director for the Physician Services Division of Quest will have responsibility for the operations of the Pittsburgh Business Unit. The person should have a mix of Operations and Sales background. In addition to managing productivity, patient service, client quality and costs, the Managing Director will have responsibility for the growth of the business. S/he will work in conjunction with the Directors of Sales (Physician and Hospital lines of business) promoting growth and managing key customer relationships. This person will have responsibility for developing and implementing long-term strategic plans.
The Managing Director responsibilities include:
- Lead the day to day operations of the Pittsburgh business unit with approximately 1300 employees and affiliations in Erie, PA and Buffalo, NY.
- Develop long term strategic plans to grow the business unit (BU) beyond market rates of 3-5% (2008 growth was 6.9%).
- Drive results and enable successful business unit (BU) service, quality, productivity and growth while managing costs.
- Ensure corporate strategies, e.g.: growth, standardization, systems, are implemented collaboratively and effectively.
- Represent local BU voice to Regional leaders and national process owners. Participate on East Region leadership team.
- Development of business unit senior leadership team and directors/managers of the business unit.
- Achieve financial and non-financial goals including revenue, operating margin, capital, quality, patient and employee engagement objectives.
- Manage individual and team accountability in a matrixed organization.
- Integration and alignment of staffing at multiple locations, both at lab and field level.
- Work in partnership with Sales to manage and enhance key customer relationships to grow the business.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations and company policies.
- Maintain both a Company and local perspective in managing the Pittsburgh operations and growth.
- Drive continuous improvement in all aspects of the business, including Six Sigma quality and processes.
- Create a high performance, values driven, quality oriented culture for the business.
- Ensure Business Unit engagement and focus required to minimize customer attrition.
- Extensive travel within Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, limited travel within region (Erie, Buffalo) and corporate (Madison, NJ) – position requires visibility to customers and employees.
- Track record of results growing a healthcare service related business and enhancing margins through expense control.
- Experience managing a large, multi-site territory with sizable revenues and number of employees.
- Prior P&L management, including revenue oversight, preferred. (versus management of operating expenses only).
- Experience and proficiency in budgeting and financial analysis
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and people, especially in an organizational matrix.
- Demonstrated people development focus and results.
- Understanding of how to manage and motivate a large team of non-exempt employees, including field focus and visibility.
- Certified Green Belt, Black Belt or Master Black Belt, desired or obtainable within in 18 months.
- Demonstrated project management excellence.
- Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff and management – frontline, local, regional, national and corporate leadership.
- Successful experience delivering projects with high IT and vendor dependencies.
- Strategic business sense and strong analytical skills.
- Experience in a highly regulated healthcare environment preferred.
- Collaborative leader who can foster team work (no autocrats)
- Excellent cross-functional team facilitation/leadership skills.
- Makes decisions that balance a variety of factors (e.g. cost, risk, client service, short-term vs. long-term impact) to achieve optimal outcome.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple priorities and detail-oriented tasks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, including presentation skills that allow this person to communicate a compelling vision to a large workforce.
- Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail.
- Demonstrated leadership and change agent skills.
The ideal candidate should have succession potential beyond the current role and would be open to relocation to advance their career.
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree desired.
